Golfers had to contend with intermittent drizzle throughout the day in the Stableford Competition played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. Special thanks go to Doyle Shipping Group who sponsored the Competition.
At halfway twenty three handicapper Andy Young was leading by a point from Colin Steele (5). Philip Graham (2) and Jamie Sutherland (-1) were a further two points back with Joel McNeilly (5) and George Tumilson (7) another three and six points respectively behind. Approaching The Maple Steele had moved into a one point advantage over Young (‘ding’ at twelve). Graham was three points further behind with Sutherland another point down. Tumilson and McNeilly were trailing by a further three points. Through Beechers, Young, after two pars and a double bogey, had regained the lead by two points from Steele (two bogeys and a par). Graham (two pars and a ‘ding’) and Sutherland (bogey and two pars) had fallen back and were another five points away. McNeilly (birdie, par, bogey) and Tumilson (two bogeys and a birdie) were a further one and two points respectively behind. Young finished ‘ding’, bogey, bogey and was joined by Steele with three pars and with a better back nine Steele was the Overall Winner with Young taking the Overall Runner-up placing. Four points behind came P.Graham (par, birdie, birdie) to win Division 1. Tumilson (birdie, bogey, birdie) and Sutherland (two pars and a birdie) finished together and with a better back nine Tumilson took second place. Sutherland won the Gross. McNeilly (three pars) was another point behind.
Cianan Mooney (13) and Trevor Fletcher (14) were vying for the lead at the turn in Division 2 three points ahead of Philip Smyth (12). Another point behind came Gary Wilkins (14). Through The Maple Mooney was leading by a point from Fletcher with Smyth another two points back. Wilkins was a further two points behind. Mooney after a run of par, bogey, ‘ding’ was joined up the Grove by Fletcher (three bogeys). Smyth (‘ding’, par, bogey) was another three points behind followed by Wilkins (par, double bogey, bogey) a further point back. Mooney with a par, ,ding, finish held on to win by a point from Fletcher (bogey, ‘ding’). Smyth (bogey, par) and Wilkins (two pars) finished together another point behind the placings. Smyth won the Seniors.
After the front nine in Division 3 Ronnie Taylor (16) and William Rainey (16) were leading by three points from David McIlroy (16) with John Fitzgerald (19) a further three points back. Through twelve Taylor (two bogeys and a ‘ding’) and Rainey (two bogeys and a ‘ding’) were joined by McIlroy (two bogeys and a birdie) with Fitzgerald (bogey, double bogey, bogey) a further four points behind. Over Beechers Taylor, McIlroy and Rainey were still vying for the lead with an improving Fitzgerald closing to within two points of the leaders. Over the closing three holes Taylor with a bogey, and two pars came in to win by a point from a rejuvenated Fitzgerald (two birdies and a double bogey). McIlroy (double bogey, par, bogey) and Rainey (three bogeys) just failed to make the placings by a point.
In Division 4 turning for home Peter Alexander (20) was leading by two points from Samuel Graham (21) with James Campbell (22) another point behind. After The Maple Graham, the new leader, was being hard pressed by both Alexander and Campbell a point behind. Through Beechers Graham (bogey, double bogey, bogey), Alexander (par and two bogeys) and Campbell (bogey, par, double bogey) were level. Campbell moved into a two point lead up the Grove after ‘dings’ from Alexander and Graham and held on with two bogeys to win by one point from P.Alexander (par, bogey) with S.Graham (two bogeys) another point behind.
