In form McQuillan wins again
The Order of Merit Stableford competition sponsored by Robinson’s NISA Extra continued at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. In Division 1 Shane McQuillan (1) opened briskly to set the early pace with three birdies and take a four point lead over Mark Dunlop (3), George Tumilson (4) and Colin Steele (2). Over Beechers, Steele, after a run of two pars and a birdie had closed to within two points of McQuillan (three pars) with Dunlop (three pars) and Tumilson (three pars) another point behind. Another par up the Grove followed by a birdie down the Lowlands left Steele within striking distance of the leader (two pars) only one point ahead with one to play. Could McQuillan hold out or would the pressure from Steele be too much? Dunlop (two pars) and Tumilson (par, bogey) were another point behind. McQuillan made sure of victory with an eagle three at the last to win by three points from Steele (par), Dunlop (birdie) and Tumilson (birdie) who finished together. Second place was taken by Dunlop with a better last two and third place went to Tumilson with a betrter last three.
Sean McCormick (1) won the Gross.
Through The Maple Brian Mahany (5) and Keith Dinsmore (6) were vying for the lead in Division 2 a point ahead of Jamie Smith (7), Graham Simms (5) and Philip Magill (6). Up the Grove Mahany after a par and two birdies was leading by a point from Dinsmore (three pars) and Smith (three pars). Magill (two pars and a bogey) was another two points behind with Simms (par, birdie, par) a further point away. In a close finish Mahany (double bogey, birdie) was joined by Smith (two pars) and with a better last six first place went to Smith with Mahany in second place. A point behind in third place came Dinsmore (par, bogey). A further point behind, Magill (two pars) and Simms (par, birdie) finished together.
Garth Wilson (6) won the Seniors.
Approaching The Maple in Division 3 Michael Stronge (8) and Damian Gillan (7) were vyting for the lead a point ahead of Denis McCarroll (10) with Kenneth Gregg (8) a further point behind. Through Beechers Gillan with two pars and a bogey was leading by a point from Stronge (two pars and a double bogey). Gregg (bogey, par, bogey) was a further two points behind. McCarroll ran into bogey trouble (double bogey, bogey, double bogey) and dropped back a further two points. In an exciting finish Gillan (par, birdie, par) and Stronge (bogey and two pars) finished together and with a better last three first place went to Stronge with Gillan second. A point behind in third place came Gregg (birdie, bogey, par) with an improved McCarroll coming home with a birdie and two pars another point behind.

Kenneth Gregg (16) 22 pts – Gross – Sean McCormick (2) 19 gr/pts – Seniors – Garth Wilson (13) 23 pts (BL3).

There was a very close finish with only one point separating six players. Through The Niuc Clifford Irvine (8) and Malachy Kyne (8) were leading by a point from Stephen Black (4) and Gary Henry (2). Patrick Dallat (Scr) was another point behind followed by Drew Stewart (9) a further three points down. Down Broadmeadows Kyne (par, bogey), Black (two pars) and Henry (birdie, par) were leading by a point from Irvine (two bogeys) with Dallat (two pars) another two points behind followed by Stewart (par, bogey) another two points back. Black finished par, bogey, par to win by one point. A point behind, Kyne (‘ding’, bogey, par), Henry (bogey and two pars), Irvine (two bogeys and a par) and an improved Stewart (two pars and a birdie) came in together. Second place went to Stewart with a better last six and third place was taken by Dallat with a better last six.
