The PGA Tankard Qualifier competition sponsored by MB Motors was played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.
Golfers had to contend with a few hail showers otherwise the weather was fine with a slight wind.
At halfway Lewis Surgenor (16), Robin Deane (21), Michael McAuley (14) and Alistair McKervill (15) were vying for the lead a point ahead of Andrew McLarnon (13), Raymond Ardis (12) and Ivan Alexander (14). Things changed over the next four holes and through the Maple Deane was leading by a point from Surgenor and McAuley. McLarnon was a further three points behind followed by McKervill and Alexander another point down. Ardis was two points further back. Approaching the Lowlands Deane was still leading by a point from Surgenor and McAuley with McLarnon and Alexander another two points behind. McKervill and Ardis were a further one and two points respectively away. In a close encounter Deane came home bogey, bogey and was joined by Surgenor with a par and a bogey finish to win Overall with a better back three with Deane Runner-up. McAuley finished bogey, par a point behind to win Division 2. In second place another point behind came McLarnon (two pars) to take second place. McKervill (bogey, par) finished in third place a further point behind. Ardis (par, bogey) and Alexander who lost his chance of finishing in the placings with a bogey, ‘ding’ finish were two further points behind.
In Division 1 at the turn JJ McAnally (5) was two points clear of Patrick Coleman (9), David Murray (8) and Joel McNeilly (6) with Gary Jackson (9) another point behind. Through The Maple McAnally continued to lead by two points from McNeilly with Coleman and Jackson a further point down. Murray had fallen back and was another point away. Up the Grove and with two holes left to play Coleman was setting out his intentions as he moved into a one point lead from McNeilly, Jackson and Murray with McAnally falling back another point away after a run of two bogeys and a double bogey. Coleman increased his lead over the closing two holes with two pars to win by two points from Jackson (par, bogey), Murray ((par, bogey), McNeilly (par, bogey) and McAnally (two pars) who finished together. Second place went to Jackson with a better back nine with Murray (better back nine) in third place.
At the turn in Division 3 Patrick Reid (17) was two points clear of William Kennedy (18) with Tony Quinn (19) and Trevor Todd (16) another point behind. Two points further back came Colin Black (18) and Jonathan Keys (16). Black and Quinn drew level with Reid through The Maple with Kennedy after a ‘ding’ at twelve two points behind. A further two points away came Todd and Keys (‘ding’ at twelve). With two to play Black and Quinn were still tying for the lead two points ahead of Reid and an improved Keys with Kennedy and Todd a further point back. Black finished with two bogeys to win by one point from Keys (bogey, par). Quinn who was level with Black at the penultimate hole ‘dinged’ the last but held on to take third place a point ahead of Todd (two bogeys), Kennedy (par, double bogey) and Reid (bogey, double bogey).
Turning for home in Division 4 James Campbell (24) held a commanding three point advantage from Brian Watt (20) and Mervyn Lamont (21) with James McKay (27) another point behind. Campbell ‘dinged’ the Fort and through The Maple McKay, Lamont and Campbell were level, four points ahead of Watt. Approaching the Lowlands Campbell had taken a one point lead over McKay with Lamont after a ‘ding’ at the Grove another point behind, followed by Watt a further two points away. In a very close and exciting finish Campbell (bogey, ‘ding’), McKay (bogey, double bogey, Lamont (two bogeys) and Watt with a late run of two pars all finished together and with a better back nine first place went to McKay. Watt took second place with a better back six and Lamont came third with a better back nine. Campbell won the Seniors.
The Gross was won by Michael Dallat (scr) with thirty six points.
