High Scoring Ian
Early starters in the Robinson’s Nisa Extra sponsored Order of Merit stableford competition held at Galgorm Castle Golf Club had to contend with heavy persistant rain. Conditions improved throughout the afternoon with intermittent periods of sunshine.
In Division 1 approaching The Niuc, Alan Proctor after opening with two birdies and a par was leading by a point from Colin Thompson (eagle, par, bogey), Rod Lennox (two birdies and a par) and Chris Cooke (birdie and two pars). Another point behind came Gary Jackson (birdie and two pars), Paul Reid (birdie, bogey, par) and Colin Steele (birdie and two pars). Over Beechers new leaders emerged with Thompson and Cooke leading by a point from Lennox, Proctor and Steele. Jackson and Reid were another point behind. Thompson finished with three pars to win by two points. There was an exciting finish for second place with Cooke (par and two bogeys), Lennox (par, double bogey, birdie), Proctor (par, bogey, par), Steele (three pars), Reid (three pars) and Jackson (bogey, par, birdie) all finishing together. Second place went to Jackson with a better last three. Steele won the Gross.
Ian Henry with a run of birdie and three pars was leading by two points through The Maple in Division 2 from David Currie (two pars, birdie, bogey), Jonathan Keys (four pars), and Andrew Robinson (bogey, par, birdie, par). Richard Lennox (birdie, par, ‘ding’, par) was a further point behind. Up the Grove Henry was still leading with Currie closing to within a point after a birdie at the Grove. Another point behind came Keys and Robinson with Lennox trailing by another three points. Henry with a bogey, par finish won by three points from Currie (two bogeys) in second place. Keys (‘ding’, birdie), Lennox (two pars) and Robinson (double bogey, bogey) were another point behind.
There was a close finish to Division 3 with four golfers involved. Through The Niuc John McCarley , Harkness McCaughan, Ian McCullough and Michael Burton were tying for the lead. Down Broadmeadows McCarley after a par and a birdie had opened up a two point advantage over McCullough (bogey, par) and Burton (par, bogey) followed by McCaughan (two bogeys) a further point behind. With one to play the scores had changed somewhat; McCarley (two bogeys) had his lead reduced to one point by McCullough (par, bogey), Burton (par, bogey) and McCaughan (bogey, par). Could McCarley hold on to his diminishing lead against this three player attack? McCarley finished with a bogey and was joined by MjcCullough (par) and McCaughan (par) with Burton (bogey) a point behind. First place went to McCarley (better last six) with second place going to McCaughan (better last six).
