Rock solid in close finish
There were close finishes to all Divisions as play continued in Robinson’s NISA Extra sponsored Order of Merit Stableford at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.
What a finish to Division 1 as six players finished level on points. Tony Carroll opened briskly with an eagle three and three birdies to take an early lead, but close up a point behind Came Joshua Hill (four birdies) and Stewart Miller (a birdie and three pars) with John Rock (two pars, birdie, par), Adrian Atkinson (four pars) and Gary Crabbe (birdie, bogey and two pars) a further point back. Up through the Grove Carroll was still leading by a point from new challengers Atkinson and Crabbe. A further point behind came Rock, Hill and Miller who were still very much in contention. Carroll parred the Lowlands and increased his lead to two points over Crabbe, Rock and Miller. Atkinson and Hill were another point down. Carroll, the long time leader, failed to score at the last and was joined in a very close and exciting finish by Rock (par), Atkinson (birdie), Crabbe (par), Hill (birdie) and Miller (par). First place went to Rock with a better back three and Atkinson finished second with a better back three. Hill won the Gross.
Approaching The Maple in Division 2 George McCooke held a one point advantage over Ciaran Doherty and William Crawford. Over Beechers Doherty after a run of three pars joined McCooke (three pars) a point ahead of Crawford (two pars and a double bogey). McCooke parred the Grove to take a one point lead over Doherty (bogey) and Crawford (par) with two to play. Down the Lowlands McCooke (bogey) was joined by Crawford (bogey) with Doherty (bogey) another point behind, but a birdie by Doherty up the last saw him finish in first place from Crawford (bogey) a point behind, taking second place. McCooke (bogey) finished a further point behind.
In Division 3 Joel McNeilly opened with a par and two birdies to take a two point lead over John McCarry (bogey, birdie, par). A further point behind came Emil Wylie (two pars and a bogey), Harkness McCaughan (double bogey and two bogeys) and Mark Fry (double bogey, par, double bogey). McNeilly parred the next three holes but his lead was reduced to one point by Fry (bogey, par, bogey) and McCarry (bogey and two pars). Wylie (two pars and a bogey) and McCaughan (two pars and a bogey) were another point behind through Broadmeadows. The scores remained the same over the following two holes. In an exciting finish Fry (par) and McCarry (birdie) returned with the same score and with a better back six first place went to Fry with McCarry taking second place. A point behind came Wylie (par), McCaughan (par) and McNeilly (bogey). McNeilly won the Alt 9 Gross.
