Four players – Noah Stewart, Steven Carmichael, Jamie Sutherland and Stephen Black – were involved in a very close finish to the Saturday Stableford Competition played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. Only one point separated the four golfers at the finish.
Nine handicapper Black led by two points through The Maple from Stewart (13) and Sutherland (-1) with Carmichael (15) another two points behind. There was little to choose between the players and approaching the eighteenth tee Stewart was leading but being hard pressed by Sutherland and Black a point behind. Carmichael was another point back. Stewart parred the last and held on to Win Overall by one point from Carmichael (par), Sutherland (par) and Black (par). The Overall Runner-up placing went to Carmichael with a better back nine. Sutherland won Division 1 and Black won Division 2.
In Division 1 at the turn :Jamie Sutherland (-1) and Jordan Miller (8)were leading by a point from Adam Martin (8). Philip Smyth (8) was another point behind. Two points further back came Paul Houston (5) with Conor Gillan (7) and Nathaniel Steele (6) another point away. Through The Maple Martin, after three pars and a birdie was leading by one point from Miller (bogey and three pars). Sutherland (three pars and a birdie) was another point away. Two points further back came Houston and Steele. Smyth and Gillan were another point behind. Three pars by Sutherland saw him join Martin (three bogeys) up the Grove a point ahead of Houston (par, birdie, par). Smyth (three pars), Gillan (three pars) and Miller (bogey, par, ‘ding’) were another point behind followed by Steele (par, bogey, par). In a close finish Sutherland came home birdie, par to win Division 1 by one point from Martin (bogey, par) and Paul Houston (birdie par) with second place going to Houston with a better back nine and Martin taking third place. Smyth (par, bogey), Miller (two pars) and Steele (par, birdie) finished together another point behind the placings.
Michael Reid won the Gross.
After completing the front nine Stephen Black (9) and Ian McCully (11) were leading by a comfortable three points from Philip Galloway (14) and Simon Finlay (13) in Division 2. Approaching the fourteenth tee Black was leading by two, three and four points respectively from McCully (‘ding’ at twelve), Galloway and Finlay. Up the Grove Black’s lead after scoring a par and two bogeys was reduced to one point by McCully (three pars) and Galloway (three pars). Another point behind came Finlay (two pars and a bogey). In another close finish Black held on with a bogey and a par to win by one point from Galloway (par, bogey) and McCully (bogey, par) with second place going to Galloway with a better back nine. McCully won the Seniors competition. Finlay (two pars) finished another point behind in third place.
In Division 3 entering the back nine Connor McNeill (16) was one point ahead of Jonathan Keys (16). Ronnie Taylor (15) and John Fitzgerald (18) were another point behind. After The Maple McNeill was still leading by a point from Keys. Taylor was another point behind with Fitzgerald a further two points back. Over Beechers McNeill (bogey, double bogey), Keys (two bogeys), Taylor (par, bogey) and an improved Fitzgerald (par, birdie) were all level with three holes left to play. In a very close and exciting finish Keys (double bogey and two pars) and Taylor (two bogeys and a par) finished together and with a better back nine first place went to Taylor with Keys second. A point behind, McNeill (par, bogey, double bogey) and Fitzgerald (double bogey, bogey, par) finished together with Fitzgerald taking third place with a better back nine.
Through halfway in Division 4 Mark Connaughty (19) and Damien Agnew (19) were two points ahead of Antony Blair (19) with Graham Murray (19) another two points back. Through fourteen Connaughty was leading by three points from Agnew. Blair was a further point back followed by Murray another two points behind. Approaching Beechers Connaughty ran into trouble with a fall at Beechers followed by a double bogey up the Grovewhere he was joined byAgnew (double bogey, par) and Blair (two bogeys) with Murray (bogey, birdie closing to within one point. In another close encounter Connaughty (par, double bogey) and Blair (two bogeys) finished together and with a better back nine first place was taken by Blair with Connaughty second. Agnew (bogey, double bogey) and Murray (two bogeys) finished together a point behind and with a better back nine third place went to Murray.
