What a finish to the McCann Trophy, a 2-man team event, played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club with strong windy conditions throughout the day. Only two points separated seven teams at the finish.
At the halfway mark the David Millar/George McCooke (14) pairing held a very slender one point advantage over Matthew Harkness and Chris Cooke (11) (‘ding’ at Broadmeadows). Another point behind came the Mark Hamilton/Willie Park (9) and Philip Galloway/Rod Lennox (10) pairings. A further one, two and three points respectively behind came Austin McGillian and Gerry Lynn (19) (‘ding’ at The Niuc); Finlay Robinson and Tony Dodds (19) (‘ding’ at Broadmeadows) and Trevor Fletcher and Colin Black (14) (‘dings’ at The Niuc and The Treasury). The main highlight of the front nine was probably an albatross 2 on the par 5 ninth Longlands by Philip Galloway and Rod Lennox.
Through twelve and approaching The Maple Millar and McCooke were still leading by one point from Harkness and Cooke. Hamilton/Park (‘ding’ at 12) and Galloway/Lennox were another point behind followed by Robinson and Dodds a further point down. The McGillian/Lynn (‘ding’ at twelve) and Fletcher/Black pairings were another point back. Harkness and Cooke drew level with Millar and McCooke over Beechers after a double bogey and two pars to a double bogey and two bogeys. These two pairings were joined in the lead by an improving Galloway and Lennox with three pars. Also improving and a point behind was the Fletcher and Black partnership with a bogey and two pars. Robinson/Dodds and Hamilton/Park were another point behind with McGillian and Lynn a further point back. Fletcher and Black bogeyed the Grove and followed with a birdie at Lowlands to take a one point lead over Harkness/Cooke (two bogeys) and Millar/McCooke (two bogeys). Another point behind came Robinson/Dodds (bogey, par); Hamilton/Park (par, bogey) and Galloway/Lennox (bogey, double bogey). McGillian and Lynn (par, bogey) were a further point away. What a finish lay ahead with only one hole to play! T.Fletcher and C.Black parred the eighteenth but were joined by M.Harkness and C.Cooke with a birdieand with a better back nine the Overall Winners were T.Fletcher and C.Black with Second Overall place going to M.Harkness and C.Cooke. A point behind came D.Millar/G.McCooke (par) and F.Robinson/T.Dodds (par) with Third Overall place going to F.Robinson and T.Dodds with a better back nine. Fourth Overall place went to D.Millar/G.McCooke. A further point behind the placings came the A.McGillian/G.Lynn (par); M.Hamilton/W.Park (par) and P.Galloway/Rod Lennox (par) pairings who finished together.
